Couponing 101- Couponing For Beginners

I received a message last night that people simply are not understanding couponing, what I talk about, what is going on in my posts or in my videos so I want to dedicate this post to those people.

Let's start at the beginning.

What is couponing:

Couponing is the act of using coupons when you go shopping in order to save the most money possible.

The majority of the coupons that I use in my posts as well as in my videos comes from the Sunday Newspaper. These coupons come in what we call inserts. This is what an insert looks like:

There are different names for the inserts. We have P&G which is Proctor and Gamble. We have RM which is Retail Me Not. We also have SS which is Smart Source. All of these inserts are going to come in your Sunday Newspaper. Each week you will receive different inserts. For example, P&G only comes out once a month.

You will also find that you will get a different number of inserts each week. For example, some weeks you will get only 1 insert while other weeks you might get up to 6.

The next type of coupon that I use is a digital coupon. These are coupons that you find on your different store apps. For example the Dollar General app will give you digital coupons that you can use at Dollar General. When you clip these coupons to your account you can use them at the store by entering your phone number at the register.

CVS, Walgreens, and Kroger also have these digital accounts. You will need a members card in order to use the digital coupons at CVS and Walgreens. All you need is your phone number to use the digital coupons at Kroger. You have to have an account with each store in order to use the digital coupons. You can sign up for an account at each stores website:

CVS.com
Walgreens.com
Kroger.com
DollarGeneral.com

We are going to talk about how to coupon at each store in a later post. Each store has a different policy and there are different ways to coupon at each one. It is far too much to cover in just one post.

The last type of coupon that I use is a printable coupon. You can print coupons at Coupons.com. It is very rare that I will actually print a coupon however, when we have really great coupons, I will print my 2. You are allowed to print 2 coupons per device when you use coupons.com. So if you have two computers, and two cell phone numbers to verify the accounts, you can print up to 4 copies.

As I said though it is very rare that I even print out any coupons because most of the time we simply do not need them.

How many inserts do you need? If you are just starting out. You will want to get 2 Sunday Newspapers. This is going to ensure that you have 2 of each coupon and it will allow you to get in on most of the sales.

Coupons used to not have limits on them like they do today however, now because of misuse, many of them have a limit of 2 like coupons per transaction. Starting out with 2 like coupons will help you to start saving money.

There are two different types of coupons. There are store coupons and there are manufacturer coupons. Most of the digital coupons that you are going to be using are going to be manufacturer coupons. However, there are some store coupons as well that are digital.

As you can see above this is a store coupon for Dollar General. This coupon says DG Store Coupon on it. Your 5 off 25 that is printed on the bottom of your receipt is a store coupon as well. You can use a store coupon and a manufacturer coupon together on the same item. However, you cannot use two manufacturer coupons together on the same item.

Here is an example of a digital coupon for Dollar General that is a manufacturer coupon.

As you can see, it does not say DG Store Coupon on it. This means that it is a manufacturer coupon. It also states right on it after the date on the bottom just above "show details" that it is a manufacturer coupon.

The coupons that you are going to get out of your Sunday Newspaper are manufacturer coupons. They cannot be used with a digital manufacturer coupon. For example, let's say that you have a digital manufacturer coupon for BOGO Febreze and you have a paper coupon for BOGO Febreze as well. If you want to use both coupons you would have to purchase 4 items. Each coupon will work on 2 items and you cannot use the coupons on the same 2 items.

Stick around guys. In the coming weeks we are going to go over even more beginners couponing for those of you out there that are just getting started.
