This week I want to talk about how to get
started couponing. Each Sunday on my YouTube channel, I am posting learning
videos, and I am starting with how to get started couponing. So I figured why
not talk about it on the blog as well.
I will tell you a little
bit about how I got started couponing it started years ago. The kids were still
small, and I came across a 5 off 25 Dollar General Saturday coupon. I had never
used one before, but I used it and was amazed that it saved me 5 bucks.
I was instantly hooked
because I realized that if I used that coupon with other coupons, I would save
a ton of money. I remembered watching a show about couponing years earlier. I
immediately went home and looked it up. For the next year, whenever I had a
spare moment, I was learning about couponing, watching Extreme Couponing,
taking as many notes as I could, and doing whatever I could to figure it
out.
Today we all know that
the show was as fake as it gets, but I was still able to learn a lot about
couponing from it. If nothing else, the show proved to me that using coupons
was possible and that I could save a ton of money.
It wasn't long before I
purchased my first newspaper and started clipping coupons. I headed to Wal-Mart
and matched all my coupons to the items that I was going to buy. Then I learned
my first lesson. Elderly women cashiers do not like couponers! For the first
time, I also experienced having to show a cashier what a coupon meant, and I
learned that cashiers had no idea how coupons worked. I was amazed.
I walked out of the
store with my items and a smile on my face, and I never looked back. I have
been couponing ever since. Of course, I have taken breaks and used my stockpile
here and there, but I will never give up couponing, and I can only hope that my
children take this skill and pass it down for generations.
Now for the important
part. How can you get started?
The first thing that you
need to do is to get your hands on some coupon inserts. These come in your
Sunday newspaper. However, purchasing the paper can end up being quite
expensive if you want to get more than one or two sets of inserts.
Instead, you can go on
Facebook and search "inserts," and you will get an entire list of
groups or people who can provide you with inserts. There are different regions
that coupons are supplied, so it is crucial to make sure you know if you are
getting the best coupons available.
You see, different
regions get different coupons. For example, one region may get "Tide"
coupons while another region will not. It is up to you to decide what region
you get your coupons from.
After you figure out
where you will get your coupons from, you will want to find a way to store your
coupons. Personally, I use a binder. You can see mine in the video over here.
Finally, it is time to
start thinking about the store you are going to begin couponing at. It is best
to take it one store at a time. Over at the Every Day Couponers YouTube Channel,
we are focusing on Dollar General.
If you are following the
learning videos, now would be the time for you to download the Dollar General
Digital coupon app. Thursday, when our scenarios come out, you will be ready to
take advantage of all of the digital deals!
That is all there is to
getting ready to start couponing. Check back every week for more posts about
learning to coupon.
